FAQ about switching electricity providers

Here are some answers to frequently asked questions about what happens once you have completed the comparison process and have chosen to switch electricity providers.

If you change your mind, that's okay, your new electricity provider must give you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, that means you have ten days to change your mind and remain with your old energy provider.
No. You won't need to do anything like that. The delivery of actual energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is all done by an energy distributer (not by your retailer). That distributor will continue to supply electricity to your premises if you switch to a different energy retailer. It is the retailer that issues your electricity bills, however, they purchase energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy electricity directly from a distributor, you have to buy it from an energy retailer. You can be sure that there won't be any interruption to your electricity supply when you switch retailers, because the underlying connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, usually in under 24 hours. But the actual switchover can't take place until your old provider has issued you their final bill, and they will only be able to do that after they've taken a final meter reading. So, it depends on how soon your meter is next due to be read. It could take up to three months.
We will sign you up with the new energy provider, and we also tell your current provider that you're leaving them. The switch to the new provider will not happen straight away, because the old provider will have to do a meter reading one final time. and then issue you their final bill. Your new provider begins charging you from the date of the meter reading. the energy distributor who supplies the energy to your premises will continue to be the same as before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. We will, however, be paid a commission by your new electricity provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Electricity Market Deregulation in Melbourne

Ever since the late 1990s Australia's electricity market in has been undergoing a deregulation process. The first stage of deregulation involved establishing an intra-state electricity network which allowed electricity that was produced in one state to be sold in another state.

Another stage, which happened earlier in some states, was the breaking up of the state owned electricity monopolies into multiple competing entities, then privatising them. In order to stimulate a greater degree of competition the energy market was divided into two levels

Distributors look after the physical delivery of electricity to the customers' premises , and they own and manage the poles and powerlines, but do not deal directly with customers.

Retailers do all the interacting with the customer. They sell the electricity and are responsible for billing. The states have between 1 and 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

In July 2008 , Melbourne 's energy market was fully deregulated. This enabled consumers to switch to another provider who had cheaper electricity prices.

Electricity in Victoria is supplied by the following five distributors

  • Jemena
Jemena distributes electricity in the south-western and northern suburbs of Melbourne.
  • United Energy Distribution
United Energy distributes electricity in the southern suburbs of Melbourne and in the Mornington Peninsula.
  • Powercor Australia
Powercor provides electricity in the western suburbs of Melbourne and western Victoria.
  • Ausnet Services
