Electricity Market Deregulation and Competition in SA

The electricity market in Australia's Eastern and Southern states has been undergoing a deregulation which began in the late 1990s. The first stage of deregulation was the establishing of a national grid {{citymarketintro4}} in one state to be sold in another state.

The next stage, which happened earlier in some states, was the splitting up of the state owned electricity monopolies into competing entities, then privatising them. In an attempt to promote better competition the energy market was separated into two types of entities

  • Energy Distributors
    Distributors look after the actual delivery of electricity to customers' premises , and they own and manage the poles and powerlines, and do not deal with customers.
  • Energy Retailers The electricity retailers do all the interacting with the customer. They sell the electricity and are responsible for billing. The states have from 1 to 3 distributors but up to thirty retailers.

South Australia 's electricity market was fully deregulated on 1 July 2013 . This meant that consumers could, for the first time, switch to whichever provider offered the cheapest electricity prices.

Tips to reduce electricity usage to save money

Here is a list of easily implemented ways to reduce your electricity consumption

  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Reduce draughts. Minimise hot or cold air getting in or getting out through the gaps under doors and around your windows through the use of door snakes and gap seal tape.
  • Turn appliances off at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Reduce usage of your clothes dryer. Instead, dry clothes outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Rather than turn on the heater, wear warmer clothing (warm socks, beanie, jumper, booties).
  • Reduce the use of lights. Use natural lighting where possible, and replace old lights with more efficient LED lights.
  • Close doors of rooms that you aren't using, so that you only cool or heat a smaller space.
  • Prevent the hot sun over-heating your home by closing the curtains and blinds in rooms that are exposed to the heat of direct sunlight.
  • Use less air conditioning by opening the windows during the night to allow the house cool down, and then shutting them each morning to keep the hot air out.

Here are some frequently asked questions and answers about what happens once you've finished the comparison process and have made the decision that you want to switch electricity providers.

If you change your mind it's okay because your new electricity provider will allow you a ten-day 'cooling-off' period, which means that you have ten days to change your mind and go back to your current energy provider.
Definitely not! The delivery of actual energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by an energy distributer (not your energy retailer). This distributor continues to supply the electricity to your house after you switch over to a different energy retailer. It's the retailer that issues your electricity bills, but they purchase energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't buy electricity directly from your distributor, you need to buy it from one of the retailers that resells their energy. You can be certain that there won't be any interruption to your electricity supply when you switch retailers, because the connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
All the 'paperwork' is processed very quickly, often in less than 24 hours. But the final switchover won't go ahead until your current provider has sent you a final bill, and that can't be done until after the next time your meter is read. Therefore, it depends on how soon your meter is next due to be read. It be up to three months.
We'll sign you up with the new energy provider, and we also notify your present provider that you're leaving them. The actual changeover to the new provider will not happen straight away, because your current provider will need to do a final meter reading. then issue you their final bill.
