FAQ about switching electricity and gas providers

This section contains questions and answers about what happens after you have completed the comparison process and decided that you want to switch electricity and gas providers.

It's okay to change your mind because your new electricity and gas provider allows you ten days of 'cooling-off' period, which means you have ten days to change your mind and stay with your old energy provider.
No. You won't have to do that. The actual delivery of energy to your premises, via the pipes and wires, is done by your energy distributer (not by your energy retailer). The distributor will continue to supply the electricity and gas to your house even if you change over to another energy retailer. The retailer issues your electricity and gas bills, but they purchase energy from the distributor and resell it to you. You can't purchase electricity and gas directly from a distributor, you must go through an energy retailer. You can be certain that when you switch retailers, there won't be any interruption to your electricity and gas supply because the connection to the distributor will continue to be the same as before.
The 'paperwork' is processed quite quickly, usually within 24 hours. But the final switchover will not take place until after your current provider has issued you a final bill, and they can't do that until after the next time they read your meter. So, it depends on when your next meter reading takes place. It could take as long as three months.
We will sign you up with your new energy provider, and we notify the current provider that you're switching away from them. The actual change in providers won't happen straight away, because the current provider will need to read your meter one final time. and then issue you a final bill. The new provider will start charging you from the date that the meter is read. the energy distributor who feeds the energy to your house will continue to be the same one as before the switch.
No. Our service is free to you. We will, however, receive a commission from the new electricity and gas provider. While our service is provided to you without charge, you may be subject to charges in relation to your current service, including exit fees. You should check this with your current supplier(s).

Tips for using less electricity and lower your bills

Here are some easy to implement ways for reducing household expenditure on electricity

  • A cheap alternative to an electric blanket is a hot water bottle.
  • Wear warmer clothing, instead of turning on the heater (warm socks, booties, jumper, beanie).
  • Turn off appliances at the power point when you're not using them.
  • Minimise draughts. Stop hot or cold air getting in or getting out via gaps under doors or around your windows by using gap seal tape and door snakes.
  • Use the clothes dryer less often. Instead, hang your clothes to dry outside or use an indoor clothes rack.
  • Reduce your use of lights by making use of the available natural light. Turn the lights off when you leave the room.
  • Use less air conditioning by opening windows at night to let the house cool down, and closing them each morning thus keeping the hot air out.
  • Prevent the hot sun from over-heating your home by closing the blinds and curtains in rooms that the hot sun shines directly into.
  • Close doors to rooms that aren't in use, so that you only heat or cool a smaller space.
